We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Pathologist Assistant to join our surgical pathology team in a high-complexity hospital setting. This role is designed for a technical expert capable of managing the full spectrum of gross examinations, from routine biopsies to large, complex whole-organ specimens. Beyond technical dissection, you will serve as a pivotal leader on the laboratory floor-troubleshooting quality issues, coordinating workflow, and providing vital mentorship and competency assessments for grossing technicians and lab assistants. responsibilities:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Advanced Grossing: Perform gross examination and dissection of large, complicated surgical specimens (typically hospital-based whole organs) in preparation for histologic processing.
  • Operational Leadership: Assist leadership with day-to-day operations, monitoring workflow, and acting as a key contact for pathologists and histology staff to optimize efficiency.
  • Training & Mentorship: Provide technical instruction and guidance to students, lab assistants, and grossing technicians. This includes orientation, training verification, and conducting new-hire Quality Control (QC).
  • Quality & Competency: Administer competency assessments and direct observations. Assist in establishing supervision levels (direct vs. indirect) for various specimen types.
  • Cytopreparation: Perform specimen preparation on non-gynecological specimens, including FNA specimens, staining, and coverslipping.
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure strict adherence to corporate safety standards, as well as local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations.
  • Clinical Consultation: Interact directly with Pathologists regarding dissection activities and identify any issues that may adversely affect test performance or results, correcting them or escalating as needed.
  • Quality Management: Participate in the development and monitoring of quality indicators for the Quality Management Program (QMP).
 
qualifications:

Required:

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or medical technology.
  • Compliance: Must meet all 1988 CLIA CFR 493.1489 requirements for non-pathologists performing high-complexity gross tissue examinations.
  • Licensure: Current and valid State Licensure.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proven ability to exercise independent judgment and troubleshoot complex laboratory issues.
Preferred:

  • Education: Master's Degree.
  • Training: Completion of a NAACLS-approved Pathologist Assistant training program.
  • Experience: At least 1 year of surgical grossing experience, specifically including large, complex specimens.
