Summary

We are seeking a talented individual to join the Chao Laboratory for neurogenetics and neuropsychology research at We are seeking a talented individual to join our team at the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute (NRI) and Cain Foundation Laboratories affiliated with Texas Children’s Hospital to discover the genetic causes of childhood neurological disorders (epilepsy, autism, ADHD, and cognitive impairments), elucidate the neurocognitive impact, and discover therapeutic interventions for rare and common neurologic disorders.

 

The primary role of the Neurogenetics Research Coordinator II is to assist in all aspects of neurogenetics human subjects research at the NRI, including, but not limited to screen and enroll participants, coordinate and supervise study visits, perform data entry, maintain study and regulatory documents, review medical records and test reports, collect and process biospecimen acquisition, and ensure the organization and safety of study participants.

 

The coordinator should have excellent attention to detail, communication, professional, and interpersonal skills, and be adaptable to study needs.

 

The coordinator will work with people from many different backgrounds, including children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and their families.

 

There will be opportunities for career development and growth. Flexibility with occasional evenings and weekend schedules (study visits may need to be coordinated with participant hospitalizations or provider availabilities).

Job Duties

  • Interviews, screens, and recruits participants for studies.
  • Explains process and procedures to educate participant, caregivers, clinical partners, and investigators regarding the research study. 
  • Maintains databases, registries, records, IRB, and regulatory documents for research studies. 
  • Schedules and provide in person supervision and coordination of research visits and biospecimen acquisitions.
  • Collect, process, ship, and maintain paperwork for blood and/or biological specimens according to procedures outlined in study protocol. 
  • Conducts testing procedures required by study protocols, data collection, data entry, documentation, and assisting in interpreting the results in an appropriate format.
  • Attends and presents at research team meetings and study meetings.
  • Retrieves and submits test results to appropriate party.
  • Generate data reports to determine feasibility for upcoming studies.
  • Maintains and organizes inventory of study supplies and equipment.
  • Attend and present at weekly research meetings with PI and team members

  • Assist in writing manuscripts and preparing poster presentations
  • Train new and less-experienced team members
  • Other duties as required for the study protocols as determined by the PI.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • One year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Candidates with an interest and/or experience in epilepsy, autism, neuropsychology, genetics
  • Two years of relevant research experience such as recruitment and consent of research participants, clinical trials.
  • Experience with both quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
  • Familiarity with human-centered design, neuropsychology, genetics, neuroscience, and/or implementation science.
  • Experience with database management systems (e.g., REDCap) and electronic medical records (e.g., EPIC).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and computer-based spreadsheets.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interest and/or experience in epilepsy, autism, neuropsychology, or genetics.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds to support biospecimen preparation and shipment.
  • Ability to walk 0.5–1 mile, as the NRI is located approximately half a mile from Texas Children’s Hospital clinical care buildings.
