Our mission is to ensure the physical, operational and financial integrity of the regional flood risk management system, in southeastern Louisiana as a defense against floods and storm surge from hurricanes. We accomplish this mission by working with local, regional, state and federal partners to plan, design, construct, operate and maintain projects that will reduce the probability and risk of flooding for the residents and businesses within our jurisdiction.
The East Jefferson Levee District jurisdictional area falls under the umbrella of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East (SLFPA-E) and includes East Jefferson, Orleans and St. Bernard parishes on the East Bank. It is the duty of the East Jefferson Levee District Police Department to patrol and inspect the levees and floodwalls that surround East Jefferson Parish and to check various gauges and flood structures to ensure the integrity of the levee system.
The incumbent in this position performs responsible, commissioned and law enforcement duties in the prevention of crime and to protect life and property, while armed and uniformed. Supervision is from a police official of a higher level, i.e. Police Sergeant, Police Lieutenant, Police Captain and/or Superintendent of Police.
AN IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Three years of law enforcement experience.
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience. The maximum substitution allowed is 60 semester hours which substitutes for two years of experience.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license.
Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification may be required.
An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Compensation: The salary offered will be determined based on qualification and experience.
NOTE: The East Jefferson Levee District is an emergency-oriented agency. Part of the mission is to protect the residents of East Jefferson Parish from tidal surge, wind-driven water and river flooding. In emergencies during Mississippi River flooding and Hurricane Tropical Storm events, the incumbent will be on call and must report for duty if so required, remaining on duty in such situations until released from duty by the Appointing Authority.
